Bill Cosby is an American icon. Providing laughter & insight for some 50 years or so now, Cosby has managed to touch each new generation in one form or another.
Recently, Bill reached out and smacked a couple generations of his fellow African Americans square across the face with remarks made in a speech. His remarks about the current state of the nations Black & Hispanic community were hard hitting and, in my opinion, right on target. Unfortunately, for the Cos, a seemingly large portion of his peers have revolted against his stance.
Why?
Let’s examine what he has said;
- Black families need to be saved…more black men need to step up and be fathers.
- Stop glorifying the ‘N’ word to all peoples, black or white.
- Stop teaching your youth that to be responsible in any way is acting “white”.
- Gangsta rap stars should not be the role models of our youth.
- Where have our morals and values as a race/community gone?
- Stop blaming whites for every problem we face…whites are not responsible for teen pregnancies, high school dropouts & black on black violence, for instance.
- Yes racism exists, but it should NOT be an excuse to give up and not even try.
Wow, really radical stuff, huh? In a nutshell, it appears Bill is trying to say that family values, self-responsibility & education are the tools used by all successful people. Black, white or otherwise, those that have parents who participate in their kids lives, those that have both a loving mother & father in the household, those who hold themselves to a higher respect level than to proliferate things like the ‘N’ word, those that don’t walk around barely able to read, write & speak in actual English not ‘ebonics’ are those people who have given themselves the best chance to succeed in this life. The man must be crazy!
As a Hispanic male in America, I hear this and feel strongly that he is only speaking truth and the truth can be a hard, bitter pill to swallow. I have long felt that the black community as a whole, obviously there are always those who are exceptions, has allowed itself to wallow in a sort of self-pity and misery for a while now. Did blacks in America get a rougher start than most? Of course they did! Slavery and the effects of long term slavery on a people are obvious, but what I don’t understand and I think most of white America for that matter doesn’t understand, is how they can allow themselves to wallow in this muck and despair after so many of their generations fought and won the hard battles for racial equality.
Yes, it is true that racism is still out there but you’d have to be a plain and simple idiot to claim that it is as hard for blacks, and minorities of all types, today as it was during the time of our grandparents or great-grandparents. There are no lynch mobs lurking about in todays world, no ‘Whites Only’ signs in the store windows. We could argue about the level or quality of education inner city kids get compared to suburb kids, but the truth is there are tons of minorities who do get educated and make something of themselves despite these obstacles.
No one, including Bill Cosby, is saying that it isn’t hard or tough and certainly no one is saying that it couldn’t be better, but to use these things as a crutch or an excuse to do nothing is an even bigger travesty. It used to be that the white man had to actively pursue holding back the black man, now they can sit back and revel in the delight that the “stupid n*ggers” are happily fucking themselves now…and even fighting for the right to do so!
Bill Cosby, I believe you to be one of the last voices of reason left for us minorities. I pray that more of us will give a listen and take your words to heart. Don’t let the jeers from the peanut gallery ever dissuade you from your mission. Always remember that those who are most guilty of what you accuse are the ones who will raise their voices loudest against you. Don’t let this modern worlds obsession with being “nice” and politically correct sway your course. The truth must be spoken if we are to save our future generations.
